Virtual Europe for Gaelscoil O’Doghair

Gaelscoil O’Doghair in Co. Limerick, is widely recognized as Ireland’s most technologically advanced primary school. Not only has it featured in several TV programmes (Nationwide, Pobal) but it has, for the last two years running, won support from the Department of Foreign Affairs to run a project commemorating Europe Day.

In 2008 the supported project focused on teleconferencing and synchronized activities with a number of European counterparts. In 2009 Gaelscoil got even more ambitious and decided to construct an immersive virtual world representing an interactive model of Europe.

In order to implement their vision Gaelscoil O’Doghair teamed up wth Daynuv who met the punishing deadline for an early launch day of Friday 1st May, when Brian Crowley M.E.P. planted a virtual tree for the official opening of Virtual Europe.

Virtual Europe is built on Opensim, the opensource version of Second Life, for secure access and full control. Numerous models of European landmarks were built for the initial template while a focus group of students were trained in how to build out further in-world objects.

Virtual Europe is an on-going project which is now advancing to the next level of interactivity, taking advantage of scripted objects and the more advanced functionality of Opensim.

The launch of Virtual Europe was covered by the Limerick Leader.
